Hey ~ how old is your nephew? I love my own nephew too, he is 12, me and my dad always take him out for some scattered fun. I am thinking about having kids or finding an adoption... looking to see if anyone would join me to form a veg family..... :P
hey karen, i love your writing~ interesting to to read those soft yet meaningful words you putted. I am in Asia, doing some planning right now for my next travel route. what's doing with you?

i'm in houston. luckily we have tons of asian restaurants and so it's pretty easy to be vegan when going out for that kind of cuisine. but mexican, italian, indian, american, etc, etc are just so hard. eggs are in everything. i felt bad pestering the waiter every single time my friends and i went out... it was always these questions: is the rice cooked with chickenstock?
is there anyway to prepare this without butter? could you use olive oil instead?
does the bread have eggs in it?
is the pasta made with eggs?
is it possible to get fruit or salad instead of mashed potatoes?
does the veggie burger have egg in it?
the list goes on...
i still pester the waiter with questions about lard, chicken stock, etc. but the egg question was beginning to get ridiculous. it was in FREAKIN EVERYTHING. but one day i'll resign myself to a salad with oil and vinegar and be happy with it while my friends have fabulously decorated plates of food. -unfortunately right now i lack the will power :-( plus, i don't like it when the waiter hates me. i feel like he'll spit in my food or something.
but i've completely eliminated eggs in my cooking. pretty much eliminated dairy... sometimes i fail and i just want some cheese. but that's slowly ending, too.
i was actually vegan before too! i'm still mostly vegan at home, but it was just so hard to go out with my friends that i eventually just settled for being a vegetarian. i'm trying to go back to the vegan thing too, though.
