I never once thought about "vegetarians' rights" before -you've opened up a new world for me! I suppose that law scholars would probably lump this case with a freedom/liberties category - a few cases on Parent-child relationships come to mind, actually. They were mostly religious based I think. The basic stance from the SC is that a parent has a right to raise his/her child the way they want granted there isn't any harm to the child and is in within legal limits - I would think that (if her lawyer's were smart) the mother would argue that vegetarianism has been proven to be far and away more beneficial than a meat-based diet. They could cite a plethora of articles, books, doctors, nutritionists, etc who would at the very least argue that it wasn't harmful.
And it's super, super cool that you got to meet Rollin! That is exciting! I was actually a philosophy and government major -and studying peter singer opened a whole world of theory on animal welfare/rights -from Rollin to Eisnitz -has definitely influenced me to further explore this area...
