Hey, I will check out the site (Vegfund) when I get home in a few days (I am on a ski trip and am skiing, eating, sleeping, and that's about all I have time for, lol). Thanks for inviting me, I'd love to help. :)
Unfortunately, I have been ill, and my company laid me off while I was on sick leave, so my role has become more passive (that is to say more internet-based) of late.
Activists did manage to get foi gras off the menu of nearly every restaurant in Austin, mainly by informing the patrons of exactly what they were eating. Whole Food stopped selling live lobster. Dogs cannot be chained in the county any more, and volunteers are helping low-income citizens with fencing. Both horse slaughter plants in Texas were closed down, and films of what really happens in slaughterhouses have prompted outrage.
Of course, there were minor skirmishes in the war of animal rights; only tiny chips in the cruelist of examples. Most people seemed more concerned about downed cows contaminating the food supply than about cruelty, but the cruelty touched more people than I suspected. Closing horse slaughterhouses won't change the mind of all people who considered a horse who worked hard for 25 years or carried their children on his back to be worthless meat when his working days are over, but going forward, I believe perceptions will change. Life will only be marginally better for the poor dogs who were thrown out into the heat and cold, away from companionship and chained up, and the law may not stop most of their current guardians from seeing them only as property, but it may cause others to think twice before bringing home a dog they cannot care for properly, and it will absolutely prevent needless cases of dogs biting because they are made artificial protective of their tiny space.
There are many, many, many things to do, many problems, but sometimes I like to look at small steps toward progress and celebrate a little.
Thanks so much for the link and for everything you do! I have to read some more articles and comment. Some very interesting ones!
