Vegans & Vegetarians making a difference!

Mirabilis

So what's the dumbest question/comment you've gotten as a veg*n?

Other than the ubiquitous, "Do you eat fish?" of course.

I think the one that took the cake for me was, "But if everyone stopped eating animals, we'd be overrun! What would we do with all those cows??" I'd heard about it before, but never actually encountered it. This person was dead serious. I couldn't decide whether to laugh in her face or throw something at her.

They don't feel anything. That's what they're here for.

I have actually heard this comment from more than one person.

I've heard the do you eat fish one and that's what they were put on earth one. But I've also heard the following:
1. Chicken broth doesn't count.
2. You can always just remove the meat from the sandwich.
3. It doesn't matter if it's grilled on the same grill as the meat.
4. of course, Marshmallows are vegetarian.

From my mom..........if I buy you an organic turkey (for Thanksgiving), will you eat it?

Aargghh! I've been vegetarian for 30+ years, and vegan for 1 1/2 yrs. now. You think she'd get it by now.

Why do people not understand that I don't view animals as objects or possessions? I'm certainly not going to eat or wear them!!!!

I really dont dig violence as a means of conflict resolution....some people may be ignorant, but that is no reason to say one of their questions is stupid/dumb....Im sorry to see such an ill-conceived forum :( disappointing....

First of all, no one here was saying that we should resort to violence and secondly, I don't think there is anything wrong with a little harmless venting. We did not say people who ask those questions are dumb.

Hey... Sorry... some people are stupid. But they CHOOSE to be stupid (or ignorant). I have a mentally disabled niece, and I don’t think of her as stupid at all, in more than I think of other species who can, say, fly but can’t do math (though, apparently, crows CAN count, a little). Stupid is having basic intelligence and choosing not to bother using it. Sorry this made you upset, but I would think most vegetarians have to grow a pretty thick skin in our culture.

who's advocating violence? what are you talking about?

i think the venting is hilarious and much needed comic relief... i have no veggie friends and on top of that - I live in Texas!

So yay for this forum! haha :-)

Hey Julia,
I think you misunderstand the purpose of the forum, even though it's stated in the name. No violence is advocated, and we aren't trying to resolve any conflicts. Nobody is confronted directly. It's just amoung us vegns, so not hurting anyone's feelings. It's just a place to blow off a little steam and discuss what it's like sometimes to live in a mostly meat-eating world. No offense intended.

It's been a long time since anyone's posted anything in this thread, but I'd like to add an old favorite:

"Wait, why can't you eat sour cream/butter/ranch dressing/mayonnaise/etc?"

No one ever thinks about what they are eating; I can't understand that. I mean, how can you not know that sour cream is a dairy product?!
